The launch of Zip Codes – July 1, 1963

July 1, 1963 was a red-letter day for the U.S. Post Office, for it marked the introduction of its Zoning Improvement Plan – ZIP for short.

 

Mr. ZIP, a cartoon mail character created in the early 1960s to entice Americans to use ZIP codes.

 

The ZIP Code Turns 50. It took an ad campaign to sell Americans on its value
