21 years ago. George Harrison left his body in L.A, on November 29, 2001. His ashes were scattered over the Ganges and the Yamuna, near Varanasi, by his wife Olivia and his son Dhani.

He left this world as he lived in it.

Harrison died from lung cancer in 2001 at the age of 58, two years after surviving a knife attack by an intruder at his home, Friar Park. His remains were cremated, and the ashes were scattered according to Hindu tradition in a private ceremony in the Ganges and Yamuna rivers in India. He left an estate of almost £100 million.

George Harrison was cremated without ceremony in a simple cardboard coffin just hours after he died, it was revealed last night.

The ex-Beatle was taken to a crematorium in Los Angeles after his family held hands around his death-bed and said a simple prayer over his body, the funeral directors who arranged the former Beatle’s funeral revealed.

And his family were given the ashes after the funeral, which cost less than £350, and in accordance with his last wishes, were reported to be preparing to scatter them on a river in India.

The death of the so-called “quiet” Beatle, at just 58, caused mourning around the world.
