Interesting Statistics About Small Businesses
The SBA defines a small business as an enterprise having fewer than 500 employees
The fastest growing sector for freelance businesses in 2011 included auto repair shops, beauty salons and dry cleaners

To classify as a “nonemployer” business you must have annual business receipts of $1,000 or more and be subject to federal income taxes
Small firms accounted for 64 percent of the net new jobs created between 1993 and 2011 (or 11.8 million of the 18.5 million net new jobs).
Since the latest recession, from mid-2009 to 2011, small firms, led by the larger ones in the category (20-499 employees), accounted for 67 percent of the net new jobs.
There are almost 28 million small businesses in the US and over 22 million are self employed with no additional payroll or employees (these are called nonemployers)
