Fitness trackers are pretty cool! They count all your activity throughout the day and let you know how much you rock…… or how much you sit. Some weight loss programs even give you extra points for activity. Those points can translate into food!
Some researchers are hoping to use fitness trackers to make being fit more fun for kids. By making getting fit a game, with measurable results (the child with the most steps is the winner?) some say that we can motivate children to lead more healthy lives. Who will be the top player, who can score the most points?
Others point out that such an idea is out of reach for much of the population. With many of these activity trackers costing upwards of $100, who will be spending this on a piece of equipment that may very well get lost right out of the gate?
Then again, why jump thought hoops in order to convince children to do what should be coming naturally to them anyway? Don't kidswantto play? While concern over our Children's health and safety has grown, often their freedom and activity has decreased. Ride your bike to the park with your friends? I don't think so! In order to keep them from harm, some children are establishing sedentary habits early in life.
