spring in the garden

spring in the garden

Ahh Spring. My old friend, how you have been longed for. Once upon a time, I regarded you as merely the season that brought rain and burdensome weeds that must be dealt with. That was before I learned the miracle of your rejuvenating power. The cycle of life that you both begin and end. Now I see you differently.

When can I start gardening in the spring?

Startseeds 6-8 weeks before your last frost date indoors for best results. March is the perfect time to get those tomato and pepper seeds started indoors ready for an early spring planting! Also a great time to start plantingthose cool weather vegetables that can withstand those last frost days of March and April.

Today, your return is that of a long absent loved one. As I anticipate your arrival, a smile comes to my face and I can feel the excitement bubble a bit inside me.

All through the long winter months while you are away, Friend, I sit in my precious and scarce free time and happily browse through beautifully designed gardening tomes and thoughtfully curated seed catalogs. Mentally, I am plotting and planning our time together. On our first few days after your arrival, we will simply relax and enjoy one another’s company. How long are you staying? Is this a short visit and you must soon depart? Ah, you are here to stay? Wonderful! Let’s get started!

Once you are established, we will get down to the business of readying the beds for planting. Bringing the delicate seedlings from the greenhouse, I show you proof that I knew you would return all along. Happily, side by side, we gently tuck the new plants into the waiting earth.
