Robert Blakeley, Designer of the Fallout Shelter Sign – RIP

Robert Blakeley, whose yellow-and-black fallout shelter sign became a grim symbol of the Cold War and throughout the country and are a now-rusting reminder of the Coldwar threats of nuclear war, died at age 95 on Oct. 25 at a Jacksonville, Fla. senior-living community.

A half-century ago, Mr. Blakeley’s bright orange-yellow and black placards were ubiquitous.
