Tammie Jo Schults: Southwest pilot is a Hero for safe landing

Tammie Jo Shults flew fighter jets for the US Navy

Tammie Jo Shults, the hero pilot who safely landed a Southwest Airlines plane Tuesday after one of its engines failed, is said by a friend to be "doing fine" and concerned about the family of the sole fatality in Tuesday's incident. An experienced pilot with Southwest Airlines, Shults was among the Navy's first women pilots trained to fly fighter aircraft.

A pilot who safely landed a Southwest Airlines passenger plane after a jet engine ripped apart mid-air has been praised as a hero by passengers.
A female passenger died after she was nearly sucked out of a shattered window of the stricken plane.

Tammie Jo Shults captained Flight 1380 to a Philadelphia airport in Tuesday's emergency, said passengers.

Survivors on the New York-to-Dallas flight carrying 149 people lauded the ex-US Navy pilot as an "American hero".

A cause has yet to be determined, but officials said an early review of the incident found evidence of metal fatigue where a fan blade had broken off, according to the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Who is the pilot?
Capt Tammie Jo Shults hero Southwest pilot one of Navy's first female fighter pilots. "She was commissioned in the Navy on June 21, 1985, and completed flight training in Pensacola," said Lt. Christina Sears, a Navy spokesperson.

"She served at the Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron (VAQ-34) in Point Mugu, Calif. as an instructor pilot flying the EA-6B Prowler and F/A-18 Hornet," Sears said. "We can confirm that Lieutenant Commander Shults was among the first cohort of women pilots to transition to tactical aircraft," Sears said.

The Powder & the Glory (the Elizabeth Arden & Helena Rubinstein story) on PBS

The Powder & the Glory (the Elizabeth Arden & Helena Rubinstein story) on PBS

www.pbs.org › show › powder-glory

"The Powder & the Glory" tells a story of women's entrepreneurship through the lens of the creation and development of the rival business empires of Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. When they first opened their shops 100 years ago, cosmetics were worn primarily by prostitutes and performers, and businesses were run mostly by men. These two indomitable immigrants changed all that and transformed.

They were in the cosmetic industry, but they were more than that. They were giants of industry. They created an industry. It just so happened it was in the world of powder and paint.

Based on British author Lindy Woodhead's bestselling book War Paint: Madame Helena Rubinstein and Miss Elizabeth Arden, their lives, their times and their rivalry, this film focuses on two women from meager means who immigrated to the US nearly a hundred years ago, reinvented themselves and ultimately created the cosmetics, health, and beauty industry we know today.

The DeLorean DMC-12 Story

The DeLorean DMC-12 (commonly referred to simply as "the DeLorean", as it was the only model ever produced by the company) is a sports car originally manufactured by John DeLorean's DeLorean Motor Company for the American market from 1981 to 1983. The car features gull-wing doors and an innovative fiberglass body structure with a steel backbone chassis, along with external brushed stainless-steel body panels. It became widely known and iconic for its appearance, and a modified DMC-12 was immortalized as the DeLorean time machine in the Back to the Future media franchise.

Want to make your iPhone faster?

Want to make your iPhone faster?

Well, we’ve got a few tricks for you. For starters, hold down on the power button until you get the “Slide to power off” message. Then hold down the home button. Within a few seconds, the screen will go blank.
iOS clears out the RAM (Random Access Memory), which can greatly enhance the phone’s operating speed. Of course, the best way to improve your phone’s speed is to close unused apps, but this is a nice add-on feature for a quick speed boost.

All phones gradually slow down, since you’ll tend to use more of your device’s internal memory over time. Regularly delete old apps and sync old photos to iCloud to clear up space. Generally, you should keep at least 20 percent of your phone’s total memory free.

You can check this out on the “Storage” menu by tapping Settings, then General, then Storage & iCloud Usage.

Keep your iPhone Stuff Locked – Six Digit Passcode

Keep your iPhone Stuff Locked.

That four-digit passcode of days past is no longer the standard. Apple pretty much insists on six digits to keep your private content, well, private. And hey, that's a good thing.

But if you've got some seriously sensitive stuff, you can always go alphanumeric. A combo of letters and numbers gives you a virtually unlimited number of possible passwords, meaning hackers (or mistrustful significant others) probably can't break in.

iPhone's Emergency SOS feature – Get help in an emergency situation!

The iPhone's Emergency SOS feature could literally save lives, so make sure to know how it works.

Click the power button five times in a row to bring up a secret menu. In an emergency, you can drag on the SOS slider to automatically call emergency services. Your phone will send your location to first responders at the end of the call (unless you choose the "cancel" option, offscreen on the photo).

Century Dome Theaters

Century Dome Theaters were Cinerama palaces of the 1960s. They are having their 50th Anniversary of the Gala Opening of Century 21– the one that started it all!– " . . . Norther California's most luxurious theater . . . "  If you have ever watched movie in a dome theater the audio quality is incredible.

Today I drove by the old San Jose Century Dome Theaters. They are all closed and waiting for demolition. Very sad.

Couponing Tips

Couponing Tips

Odds are you've started the year with a list full of New Year's resolutions that might include weight loss, travel plans, getting a new or better job or volunteering more. Regardless of what they are, if saving money isn't one of them, then add it to your list now. Unlike some of the other popular resolutions, saving money is one that's hard to disagree with and easy to stick to. After all, why choose to pay more if you don't have to? To set yourself on the right financial foot, I'll focus on one essential piece of a successful budget: couponing. It's free, easy and yields savings almost instantly. Here’s what you need to know:

Check Your Mailbox

A good place to start is your (snail) mailbox. Remember all that junk mail you regularly throw out? You might as well throw away your hard-earned money. Next time, at least leaf through the coupons to see whether you can snag some great deals on products you already purchased. Don't be dismayed if you don't immediately find them – they'll likely be hidden among the "must-have" ads for patio sun canopies and air fresheners.

Pay Attention to “Real” Savings

Which brings me to an important point: Don't fall victim to buying something just because a great coupon exists. Before you buy, consider whether you really need the discounted item. My husband used to jokingly ask me, "How much did you save us today?" I was shopping the sales and using coupons for my purchases and assumed I was saving money. However, my haul was rarely an accurate depiction of what we needed. I'd walk into a store meaning to spend about $25 on home essentials, but would leave with a bill almost double that. I fooled myself into thinking I'd saved so much money. Don't fall into this trap. Before you buy something with a coupon, ask yourself a few questions. Would you normally purchase it? Is it a staple that's sure to get used? If not, think long and hard about whether it has a place in your house – or your budget.

Go Online

Once you are comfortable using paper coupons, I strongly urge you to explore the wonderful world of online couponing. The day I discovered it existed was the day life got easier and my dollar stretched further. My husband stopped teasing me when he saw my emails touting real savings on products we actually needed. Even with the declining price of gas these days, I'm hesitant to go to the store for much outside of buying groceries (and even that is one of my least favorite tasks, ranking right up there with pumping gas and going to the dry cleaners).

Obituary: Stephen Hawking at age 76

World renowned physicist Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76.

He died peacefully in his home in Cambridge in the early hours of Wednesday, his family said.

He was known for his work with black holes and relativity, and wrote several popular science books including A Brief History of Time.

"We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today," his children said.

At the age of 22 Stephen Hawking was given only a few years to live after being diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease.

The illness left him wheelchair-bound and largely unable to speak except through a voice synthesizer

In a statement his children, Lucy, Robert and Tim, said: "He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years."

They praised his "courage and persistence" and said his "brilliance and humour" inspired people across the world.

"He once said, 'It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love.' We will miss him forever."

Fact file: Stephen Hawking

  • Born 8 January 1942 in Oxford, England
  • Earned place at Oxford University to read natural science in 1959, before studying for his PhD at Cambridge
  • By 1963, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and given two years to live
  • Outlined his theory that black holes emit "Hawking radiation" in 1974
  • Published his book A Brief History of Time in 1988, which has sold more than 10 million copies
  • His life story was the subject of the 2014 film The Theory of Everything, starring Eddie Redmayne

The scientist gained popularity outside the academic world and appeared in several TV shows including The Simpsons, Red Dwarf and The Big Bang Theory.

Warren Buffett, “I could end the deficit in 5 minutes,”

Warren Buffett, "I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election. The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971…before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc. Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land…all because of public pressure.

Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise. In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.

*Congressional Reform Act of 2011*

1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/17. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term's), then go home and back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive the message. Maybe it is time.

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!!!!! If you agree with the above, pass it on.
