Standing Garden: Happy Gardening and Happy Back

Standing Garden: Happy Gardening and Happy Back

For years our vegetable garden was on the ground. For years California has had a severe drought. This year we removed all of the grass in our backyard and replaced it with pea gravel. Nada, Zero, el zippo watering.

The older we get the further the ground is from us. Especially getting up. We are slowly transitioning to a Standing Garden.

No Bending, No Weeding and in places our Standing Garden is Self-Watering, Too!
  • Elevated garden is easy to plant, tend and harvest
  • Completely movable
  • Allows for growing a garden in any sunny spot!
  • The garden boxes originally came with casters.
Our Standing Garden allows us to garden in complete comfort — no bending or stooping. Grow salad greens, herbs, even tomatoes and peppers on a deck or patio.

In our plastic rot-resistant planter boxes we made drainage holes on the bottom of the boxes. Placed a thin layer of drainage rocks, then gardening soil. Since the elevated garden structure is two tiered and water will flow out of the top garden box down to another planter box below catching the draining water. Double mileage.
  • The stands were left over from another project. (Free)
  • We already had a few planter boxes. (Free)
  • Assembling everything was effortless.

Happy Gardening and Happy Back!

MONARCH BUTTERFLY CHARM AT NATURAL BRIDGES STATE BEACH

MONARCH BUTTERFLY CHARM AT NATURAL BRIDGES STATE BEACH

In Santa Cruz celebrates all creatures great and small, especially those of the migrating variety. On one end, we are captivated by the sight of a whale surfacing from the depths of the sea and, on the other, we delight in the enchanting fluttering of the monarch butterfly.

You will see the Monarch Butterfly’s ? charm by visit the Natural Bridges State Beach, In Santa Cruz. The monarchs head back to their winter habitat in the eucalyptus grove, the only State Monarch Preserve in California.

During the weekends, from mid-October through through mid-January, guided tours of the Monarch Butterfly Grove are available at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with peak monarch observation occurring in late-November and early-December, according to a Docent Naturalist. Because monarch migration is variable, it is recommended to call the park first for a current update. (831) 423-4609

The minimum temperature a monarch needs to fly is 55 degrees. Temperatures below 55, mean you are more likely to see monarch clusters hanging like leaves off the eucalyptus trees, which can also be quite mesmerizing.

Mandy Patinkin star ‘The Princess Bride!’ favorite quote.

Mandy Patinkin star ‘The Princess Bride!’ favorite quote.

The Princess Bride is a 1987 film, based on a 1973 novel, that tells a classic fairy tale, with swordplay, giants, an evil prince, a beautiful princess, and yes, some kissing (as read by a kindly grandfather).

Mandy Patinkin star ‘The Princess Bride!’ favorite quote. According to Patinkin, that would be the line his vengeance-seeking character says near the end of the film, after finally getting what he has trained his whole life to achieve: “I have been in the revenge business so long, now that it’s over, I don’t know what to do with the rest of my life.”

The actor was 34 when he played the revenge-obsessed Inigo Montoya, but didn’t fully realize the character's significance until he was in his late 50s.

Inigo Montoya:

I have been in the revenge business so long, now that it's over, I don't know what to do with the rest of my life.

Westley:

Have you ever considered piracy? You'd make a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts.

Reno turns 150

One hundred fifty years ago this Wednesday, the Central Pacific Railroad auctioned off 400 lots surrounding the site of a planned railroad depot. The city of Reno was born on May 9, 1868.

The town got its name from Gen. Jesse Lee Reno, a Union Army general killed by a Confederate sniper in 1862. He never set foot in Nevada, let alone his namesake city, but researchers think CPRR president Leland Stanford named the town after Reno to honor Stanford's friend General Irvin McDowell, one of Reno's former commanding officers.

Why My Guitar Gently Weeps – Guitar Center Faces Imminent Bankruptcy

Why My Guitar Gently Weeps – Guitar Center Faces Imminent Bankruptcy After 59 Years In Business

As a background, Bain Capital, an equity fund that was founded Mitt Romney (take that in whatever way you want), bought Guitar Center for 2.1 Billion dollars. Why people who own Burger King, Domino’s Pizza, Toys R Us, and Sealy mattresses (among a few other HUGE names in their specific markets) have anything to do with guitars is beyond me.

As guitar sales plummet, some of the biggest guitar brands and retailers are facing bankruptcy.  The latest is Guitar Center, which narrowly averted default and just got downgraded by S&P.

Rock n’ roll may never die.  But that’s little consolation to businesses based on the once-unstoppable genre and its storied instrument, the guitar.

Earlier this year, creditors and analysts pointed to a deteriorating financial crisis at Gibson Guitar, with a bankruptcy anticipated as early as this summer.  Now, you can add Guitar Center to the watch list.  Just this week, leading rating agency S&P downgraded Guitar Center to a ‘CCC—’, indicating serious risk of bankruptcy.

Guitar Center, Inc. is the largest instrument retailer in the United States with nearly 280 locations.  The retailer actually got started as ‘Organ Center’ back in 1959, but eventually shifted to ‘Guitar Center’ in the 70s.  That was an obviously smarter choice, with the guitar dominating the instrument landscape for nearly 40 years afterward.

Earlier this month, Moody’s warned investors of an expected default with bondholders.

But Guitar Center narrowly averted that classification with an emergency loan renegotiation involving debt surpassing $615 million.  Accordingly, early this morning (April 17th), Moody’s noted that it did not consider Guitar Center to be in default.  Instead, the rating agency upgraded the retailer slightly to indicate solvency.

“All of today’s rating actions are in response to the closing of an exchange offer that was announced by Guitar Center this past March,” wrote Keith Foley, a Senior Vice President at Moody’s.

But Moody’s reiterated that this was still a troubling situation.  “The rating outlook remains negative,” the agency stated.

In total, Guitar Center is juggling more than $1 billion in outstanding loans.

In its rating downgrade, S&P indicated that Guitar Center was ‘vulnerable’ to a bankruptcy filing or credit default.

Any shock to the system, including an economic downturn, could plunge the retailer into a crisis.  That ‘shock’ could also include a sharper nosedive in guitar sales, already an instrument under duress.  According to the Washington Post, annual guitar sales slipped from 1.5 million to 1 million leading up to 2017, suggesting that annual sales are currently below the million-mark.

Gibson files for bankruptcy with deal to renew guitar business

Gibson bankruptcy hits a Sour Note and Flat Chord. Investors are fretting about its billion-dollar debt load.

Gibson Brands filed for bankruptcy with a turnaround plan that will give some of the company’s lenders equity ownership of the iconic American business that’s supplied guitars to B.B. King, Elvis Presley and Pete Townshend.

A restructuring support agreement with senior secured noteholders will help it repay bank loans while going through a "change of control" transaction, according to papers filed Tuesday with its Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware. The petition estimated up to $500 million in debt, and the lenders have agreed to an operating, or "debtor in possession," loan of up to $135 million to fund operations.

The change in control will give noteholders equity in a new company, replacing current stockholders such as Chief Executive Officer Henry Juszkiewicz. According to court filings, current noteholders include Silver Point Capital, Melody Capital Partners LP, and funds affiliated with KKR Credit Advisors. The restructuring will also allow the instrument business to "unburden" itself of a consumer-electronics unit that Gibson blamed for its financial woes.

Gibson, founded in 1894, sells more than 170,000 guitars annually in 80 countries. Its guitars are U.S.-made, with factories in Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee, and Bozeman, Montana. It also sells studio monitors, headphones, turntables and other musical instruments.

Exit Path

Its Gibson Innovations business, acquired in June 2014 from Koninklijke Philips NV, was the source of its financial woes, according to a court statement from Brian J. Fox, a managing director at Alvarez & Marsal who will serve as the company’s chief restructuring officer. Acquired through a leveraged transaction, the business faced significant sales declines due in part to a loss of credit insurance overseas.

With the noteholder agreement, the iconic company has "an exit path from Chapter 11 as a deleveraged business, poised for continued growth," Fox said in the filing.

Fox described the electronics business as having become "trapped in a vicious cycle in which it lacked the liquidity to buy inventory and drive sales." Cross-defaults had threatened the musical instruments business, and the company has been working with advisers since the fall of 2017 to try and solve the problem.

Before the filing, Gibson reached an arrangement with major constituents to its musical instruments business, but not the consumer electronics business, Fox said.
