Earth Day: Support for environmental protection

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG (formerly Earth Day Network) including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.

Earth Day Significance: Support for environmental protection

In 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, to first be observed on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. This day of nature’s equipoise was later sanctioned in a proclamation written by McConnell and signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. A month later a United States Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed the idea to hold a nationwide environmental teach-in on April 22, 1970. He hired a young activist, Denis Hayes, to be the National Coordinator. Nelson and Hayes renamed the event “Earth Day”. Denis and his staff grew the event beyond the original idea for a teach-in to include the entire United States. More than 20 million people poured out on the streets, and the first Earth Day remains the largest single day protest in human history. Key non-environmentally focused partners played major roles. Under the leadership of labor leader Walter Reuther, for example, the United Auto Workers was the most instrumental outside financial and operational supporter of the first Earth Day. According to Hayes, “Without the UAW, the first Earth Day would have likely flopped!” Nelson was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom award in recognition of his work.

The first Earth Day was focused on the United States. In 1990, Denis Hayes, the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international and organized events in 141 nations.

On Earth Day 2016, the landmark Paris Agreement was signed by the United States, China, and some 120 other countries. This signing satisfied a key requirement for the entry into force of the historic draft climate protection treaty adopted by consensus of the 195 nations present at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris.

Numerous communities engaged in Earth Day Week actions, an entire week of activities focused on the environmental issues that the world faces.

On Earth Day 2020, over 100 million people around the world observed the 50th anniversary in what is being referred to as the largest online mass mobilization in history.

California – The 16th Avenue Steps, in San Francisco – At the corner of Moraga Street and 16th Avenue, in the Golden Gate Heights neighborhood of San Francisco is the base of the most beautiful staircase in this city. A brightly-tiled panel covers the front of each of the 163 steps, and as the stairs stretch up the hill toward 15th Avenue, the individual panels blend together to form a massive, mosaic picture. Stunning in its entirety, yet intricate and detailed enough to be captivating when viewed up close. More beautiful when seen in person.

Ukraine – Potemkin Stairs in Odessa – It is the formal entrance into the city from the sea and the most famous symbol of Odessa. It was originally known as the ladder Richelieu. The top step is 12.5 meters wide, and the lowest step widens to 21.7 meters. Because of the different widths above and below, the stairs create the illusion of greater length. The beautiful landscaping along the sides provides a little shade for the challenging climb.

Taylor Swift’s “Folklore” Album Review

Taylor Swift’s “Folklore” Album Review.

Listened/watched Taylor Swift’s perform “Folklore” on Disney Prime. This is a radical change of musical and lyrical style. Her earlier seven albums were biographical, “Folklore” is a departure.

When Taylor was a very young teenager her family relocated to Nashville to help her musical career. For a few years she was a professional song writer, writing songs everyday for other artists. Taylor Swift has mastered her craft.

The “Folklore” album is mostly a guitar, piano and her lovely voice and lyrics. Due to the Pandemic all of the recording studios were closed so she recorded the album in her house, Long Pond Studios and another smaller studio up the road. Taylor Swift had a choice to wait out the Pandemic or accomplish something. She delivered.

I was surprise at Long Pond Studios how much very old musical instruments (Kay guitar, Fender amp and an ancient Vox bass, etc.) we’re laying all over the studio and metal stands. In 1981 I was in Ronnie’s studio in Nashville, Tenn. I asked why were all of the music stands, chairs everything in the studio made of wood? They were surprised I noticed. The studio manager reply, “Ronnie Milsap can “hear the metal” resonant and demanded everything to be switched over to wood.” Now that’s a set of ears.

The “Folklore” album was just recently released and became the first million-selling album of 2020 in U.S. If you need to chill this is the album for you.

100 years ago, the first commercial radio broadcast announced the results of the 1920 election.

100 years ago, the first commercial radio broadcast announced the results of the 1920 election – politics would never be the same.

Only 100 people were listening, but the first broadcast from a licensed radio station occurred at 8 p.m. on Nov. 2, 1920. It was Pittsburgh’s KDKA, and the station was broadcasting the results of that year’s presidential election.

On November 2, 1920, station KDKA made the nation’s first commercial broadcast (a term coined by Conrad himself). They chose that date because it was election day, and the power of radio was proven when people could hear the results of the Harding-Cox presidential race before they read about it in the newspaper.

For centuries, the principal medium for mass political news was the printed word. When Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas participated in a series of nine debates for a U.S. Senate in Illinois in 1858, in-person attendees numbered in the thousands, but millions followed the debates through extensive newspaper accounts nationwide. The candidates were expected to make arguments, and each of the debates lasted three hours.

Totalitarians such as Mussolini and Hitler would broadcast speeches to incite passions in a way that also made possible for them to rise to power.

Halloween full Moon hadn’t appeared for everyone in all time zones since 1944!

Farmers’ Almanac explains, “but a Halloween full Moon hadn’t appeared for everyone in all time zones since 1944!”

Halloween will be extra spooky this year when a blue moon rises on Oct. 31, something that won’t happen again for nearly two decades.

Yes, a Halloween full moon! Because it’s the second full moon in a calendar month it’s called a Blue Moon. The last time a Halloween full moon happened for all of the US time zones was in 1944. The next time it will happen is 2039.

It’s great that it is happening on Halloween!

Billie Eilish singing “Bad Guy” on Rotating Stage

Tonight I throughly enjoyed watching/listening to Billie Eilish singing “Bad Guy” (Live From Saturday Night Live) on a rotating stage. Wow what a phenomenal effect. Click here to view the video, you will love it!

https://youtu.be/Jn1Uwsg3eRQ

First to dance on a rotating stage was Fred Astaire. It’s no great secret how Fred Astaire was able to literally “dance around the room” in Stanley Donen’s 1951 movie Royal Wedding. The hotel room set was constructed inside a huge rotating steel cage, all the furniture was bolted down, and the camera and cameraman were strapped down and traveled around 360 degrees while Astaire danced away, always remaining upright as the room rotated around him.

Second to dance on a rotating stage was Michael Jackson.

Billie Eilish did a phenomenal job singing and dancing on her rotating stage on Live From Saturday Night Live singing “Bad Guy” Watch the attached video.

“Flying-V” Dutch developed futuristic aircraft makes successful maiden flight

Dutch Researchers ‘“Flying-V” has completed a successful maiden flight of the futuristic and fuel efficient aircraft that could one day carry passengers in its wings.

The unique design of the Flying-V places the passenger cabin, the cargo hold and the fuel tanks in the wings, and experts hope that the plane’s aerodynamic shape will cut fuel consumption by 20% compared to today’s aircrafts.

The Flying-V is developed by researchers at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and partner Dutch airline KLM, to take the highly anticipated aircraft along its next developmental steps.

Experts worked hard to optimize the plane: in order to improve telemetry, the team was forced to change the aircraft’s center of gravity and adjust its antenna.

A team of researchers and engineers tested the aircraft at a guarded airbase in Germany, where they worked with an Airbus team to test takeoffs, maneuvers and approaches, and landing.

Beetle Celebrates its 82nd Year

VW Beetle Celebrates its 82nd Year
The VW Beetle was once the world’s bestselling car.

Eighty-two years. Yup, that’s how long the VW Beetle has been around. It’s one of the most iconic cars in automotive history – recognized and loved by many for its distinct shape, which really hasn’t changed much in eight decades, and rich heritage.

Important Moments in Volkswagen History?
We can’t believe that Volkswagen is celebrating 80 years! Wow! In those eight decades, Volkswagen has enjoyed a colorful history with many important milestones. To celebrate Volkswagen’s 80th birthday, we are going to share a timeline that highlights some of the most important moments in VW history!
May 28, 1937 – Volkswagen (which literally translates to “the people’s car”) is created.
1938 – The Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, Germany is completed and the first Type 1 (the Beetle) rolls off the assembly line.
WWII – During the war, Volkswagen primarily focused on military vehicles. The Volkswagen factory sustained heavy damage from Allied air attacks.
1945 – After the Allied victory, the British helped rebuild the Volkswagen factory and mass produce new cars.
1949 – Volkswagen vehicles become available in the United States, and within a few years, became a favorite worldwide brand. The Type 2 (known as the VW Bus) was also introduced and would become a popular vehicle choice (along with the Beetle) during the Hippie movement of the 1960s.
1955 – Volkswagen Group of America is established to better serve the growing US market. The millionth Type 1 Beetle also rolled off the assembly line that year.
1968 – Moviegoers are introduced to Herbie, a headstrong Volkswagen Beetle with #53 decals in the Disney film, The Love Bug.
1972 – The Volkswagen Beetle surpasses the Ford Model T in production numbers (15,007,034) on February 17. This made it history’s most produced single model at the time.
1974 – Volkswagen begins to produce its Golf hatchback model, which would arrive in the US in 1978 as the Rabbit. A new factory in New Stanton, PA would produce the models for the American market.
1979 – The Volkswagen Jetta is introduced and enjoyed excellent sales in Europe. It would not arrive in the US until 1993 and experienced dismal sales for the first year.
1998 – The Volkswagen New Beetle is produced and would remain in production until 2011.
2002 – Volkswagen’s first modern SUV, the Touareg, is introduced.
2003 – The last Type 1 Beetle (production number 21,529,464) is made on July 30.
2008 – Chattanooga, TN becomes the home of a new Volkswagen production plant.
2009 – Volkswagen merges with Porsche
VW History:
The system of autobahns would bring the people of Germany together, and affordable cars populating them would give the impression of an affluent nation that had been ushered into the modern age.
Hitler chose Ferdinand Porsche as its chief designer. Hitler laid the foundation stone for the new Volkswagen factory on May 26, 1938.
Once the war began, the factory Volkswagenwerk at Wolfsburg created vehicles for the army, supported by slave labor.
The Beetle was the product of Ferdinand Porsche and the consulting specialists Porsche hired, such as Austrian Erwin Komenda and Hungarian Béla Barényi, who published a design identical to the Beetle in the mid-1920s and is considered the true “father of the people’s car.”
