PHILIPS Direct 3D Visualization of Nerves can Influence Surgery Decisions

PHILIPS Direct 3D Visualization of Nerves can Influence Surgery Decisions

With the PHILIPS 3D NerveVIEW method adds information when diagnosing atypical herniations. The additional insights changed the way of working and benefit their patient care.

NerveVIEW may help when other sequences are inconclusive.

In patients with lower extremity neurological symptoms, NerveVIEW helps us to determine the disease matching the patient’s symptoms by directly visualizing the nerves. We use the sequence mainly, when there is suspicion of intraforaminal stenosis, extraforaminal stenosis or lateral disc herniation, which is often based on routine T2- and T1-weighted images. Additionally, the excellent depiction of the course of nerves makes NerveVIEW a good navigator when applying treatment such as block therapy or surgery.

NerveVIEW can clearly show nerve courses and presence of nerve compression. Where a good spatial resolution is required

3D NerveVIEW achieves high resolution and we use its source images instead of adding fat-suppressed T2W

Implementing NerveVIEW without lengthening exam time. This is important for patients with severe lower extremity symptoms.

The sequence facilitates diagnosis of lower extremity pain and informs our decision-making regarding therapy and surgery.

Woodstock Couple 46 Years Later is Still Together

This Couple From the Woodstock LP Cover is Still Together 46 Years Later

Bobbi and Nick Ercoline's love story is more iconic than most may know. In fact, it was these two whose photo was used as the cover for the Woodstock soundtrack 46 years ago. While Woodstock celebrates its 46th anniversary this week, the Ercolines look back on the event that captured a small, yet essential, moment of their union.

Two years after the photo was taken, the two were married. Today, they have two grown children and look back on the event that is both "meaningful" and "phenomenal" in their book, according to Bobbi.

"All those people coming together with no violence, just peace, love and sharing."

A moment in time that influenced generations to follow, the Ercolines' picture and story emulate something of a Woodstock fairy tale

Bay Area Aloha Festival – August 11-12, 2018

Bay Area Aloha Festival – August 11-12, 2018

    •    What is the PICA Bay Area Aloha Festival?
The Bay Area Aloha Festival is a free, two-day ethnic arts festival celebrating Pacific Islander culture. Each year thousands of islanders and islanders-at-heart gather to celebrate the culture through music, dance, arts and crafts, authentic food, and educational workshops.  The festival is held during the first full weekend in August.  If August 1st falls on a Sunday, then the festival is held the following weekend.

    •    When and where is it this year?
August 11-12, 2018 (Saturday & Sunday), 10:00am – 5:00pm, San Mateo County Event Center (SMCEC), 1346 Saratoga Drive, San Mateo, CA 94403.

    •    Why did you move the festival from the San Francisco Presidio to the San Mateo County Event Center (SMCEC)?
Construction changes at the San Francisco Presidio have resulted in a two-thirds reduction of parking spaces.  This change made it impossible to accommodate the large number of people who drive to our festival.  SMCEC is the home of the annual San Mateo County Fair and has over 2500 parking spaces available.

    •    What is the new Aloha Festival layout at the San Mateo County Event Center?
The layout is subject to change, but we have a planned venue map here.  In summary, the entertainment stages will be outdoors in front of the Central Mall Lawn Area (seating info below), food vendors will be in the West Parking Lot, and the `Ohana Korner kids' area will be outside Fiesta Hall.  Arts & Crafts vendors will be inside Expo Hall and the Education Pavilion will be inside Fiesta Hall.  The East Parking Lot at 1346 Saratoga Drive, San Mateo, CA 94403 is the parking lot all attendees should use, and then walk to the entrances at Gates 5 & 6.  The West Parking Lot is for food vendor booths only.

    •    Is there a charge for admission?
No, Aloha Festival still has a free admission policy!  We do this to keep our event affordable for families, many of whom already find the high cost of living in the Bay Area quite challenging.  We are doing our best not to add to that burden.

    •    Where do I park?
There is a large parking lot at the festival site, where paid parking is available for $15.00 per vehicle; an extra charge applies if your vehicle uses more than one slot. We encourage using carpools or public transportation.

Located in West Berkeley, the building at 2600 Tenth Street in which it operated is being sold, and that Fantasy Recording Studios will be closing effective September 15th, 2018.

Numerous successful albums were recorded there, including Green Day’s 1994 Dookie and Santana’s 1999 Supernatural, which went 15 times platinum and garnered nine Grammy Awards.

The list of accomplished artists who have recorded at Fantasy include Green Day, Tony Bennett, Bobby McFerrin, Country Joe McDonald, Creedence Clearwater Revival, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans, Flora Purim, Journey, Santana, Robert Cray, Aerosmith, Counting Crows, Chris Isaak, and many more. The building has also been a film center for almost 30 years. At least three Academy Award-winning films, including One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Amadeus and The English Patient, were produced there.

Fantasy Studios was one of the most requested recording studios on the West Coast was comprised of three legendary recording and mixing rooms, all equipped with ProTools HDX and an extensive selection of microphones, outboard gear, instruments, and natural echo chambers.

Fantasy Studios will truly be missed.

Cafe X opens a robotic coffee shop in SF

Cafe X opens a robotic coffee shop in SF

Cafe X opens in San Francisco, bringing robots to the coffee shop

The world’s first coffee shop opened in Constantinople in 1555. Four hundred and some years later, Cafe X is putting a twist on that old barista model. Opening in San Francisco today, the startup is opting instead to have a large robotic arm craft your caffeinated potions.

Many arguments for automation go, consumers will be directly benefiting from cheaper prices. Cafe X is asking just $2.25 for an 8 oz drink that regularly goes for $4 – $5 in San Francisco. At scale, Cafe X should be able to increase margins within the industry while reducing wait times for hurried patrons.

Third-wave coffee affectionados dealing in drips and expensive siphons might find fault in Hu’s thesis, though a Mitsubishi 6-axis industrial robot is arguably the most “elite” tool imaginable for making coffee.

Bob Ross Is Making A Happy Little Comeback At Public Library Paint Nights

Bob Ross Is Making A Happy Little Comeback At Public Library Paint Nights

It's been more than two decades since iconic painter Bob Ross convinced TV viewers to paint along with him as he chatted and philosophized in his soothing, encouraging voice.

Now, libraries around the country are tapping into the phenomenon, holding paint-along evenings where patrons watch Bob Ross episodes and re-create his art. The evenings are such a hit that libraries are creating wait lists and adding more sessions.

Here & Now's Robin Young talks with Sarah Burris, who's organizing Bob Ross events for the Northwest Regional Library system in Panama City, Florida. "We've had patrons come in with the Bob Ross T-shirts and the wig," Burris says.

Spray-On Yoga Pants?

Lululemon has created an online ad for spray-on yoga pants in a humorous embrace of a late-night comedy joke. Jimmy Kimmel aired a spoof commercial Thursday about the fake product, called "Lululemon Pledge," while mocking the fact that some schools have banned yoga pants for being too tight."Lululemon Pledge — because the best pants are no pants at all," a voice-over for the ad says.

Tuesday, July 3rd – The Dawdlers, Pop Music

Inspired by the avalanche of great pop music that's come from Britain and its Commonwealth since The Beatles started that train down the tracks, and much American pop since which was in turn inspired by that, The Dawdlers play a mixture of cover and original music, including songs by British artists Squeeze, Crowded House, Elvis Costello, The Police & Sting, Keane, Coldplay, Peter Gabriel, Paul Rodgers, and those of their British invader forebears Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Dave Clark Five, and, of course, The Beatles themselves, as well as many complementary songs by American artists like Cheap Trick, Marshall Crenshaw, Kacey Musgraves, Los Lobos, The Stray Cats, The Pretenders, & Shawn Colvin.

Rescued Bulldog named Zsa Zsa Wins Ugliest Dog Contest

Rescued Bulldog named Zsa Zsa Wins Ugliest Dog Contest

This is the 30th year for the annual contest. Organizers say the event shows how lovable and unique all dogs are, regardless of what some people might view as imperfections.

Zsa Zsa inherits the Ugliest Dog crown from Martha, a Neapolitan mastiff who won the title by dint of her massive cheeks — "so expansive, in fact, they droop practically to her knees and flap like slobbery wings when she shakes her head.

The special dog won a trophy and a $1,500 prize. The competition was held in Petaluma, California.

How many People are Incarcerated in the United States.

How many People are Incarcerated in the United States.

Can it really be true that most people in jail are being held before trial? And how much of mass incarceration is a result of the war on drugs? These questions are harder to answer than you might think, because our country’s systems of confinement are so fragmented. The various government agencies involved in the justice system collect a lot of critical data, but it is not designed to help policymakers or the public understand what’s going on. Meaningful criminal justice reform that reduces the massive scale of incarceration, however, requires that we start with the big picture.

Here is a little clarity by piecing together this country’s disparate systems of confinement. The American criminal justice system holds almost 2.3 million people in 1,719 state prisons, 102 federal prisons, 1,852 juvenile correctional facilities, 3,163 local jails, and 80 Indian Country jails as well as in military prisons, immigration detention facilities, civil commitment centers, state psychiatric hospitals, and prisons in the U.S. territories.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions owns shares in the private prison industry and stands to gain financially from some of his recent policy announcements:

It’s more than a conflict of interest. The more people Attorney General Jeff Sessions sends to private prisons, the more money he shoves in his pockets. From announcing he wants federal law enforcement agencies to bust people for a little bit of weed, to ordering federal prosecutors to find ways to convict more immigrants, Sessions is looking for ways to provide more clients to private prisons that are contracted by the federal government.

Tuesday, 19th of June the U.S. Patent Office will issue its 10 millionth patent.

On Tuesday, 19th of June the U.S. Patent Office will issue its 10 millionth patent.

At this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) event in Austin, Texas, the USPTO will announce the issuance of the 10 millionth patent. To commemorate the event, USPTO will be unveiling a new design for the cover of granted patents.

In 1790, when the first patent was granted, an issued patent consisted of a document written on a piece of parchment signed by the President, the Secretary of State and the Attorney General. Now patents are signed by the Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office and come bound with an attractive soft cover that includes the USPTO’s seal. The USPTO seal contains a federal eagle astride a shield clutching an olive branch and arrow, it is imprinted in a gold medallion. There are two red ribbons that drop down from the medallion.

This will mark the second time in over 100 years that the USPTO has changed the cover of a granted patent. Since the first patent was issued there have only been 12 cover design changes. The current cover’s design has been in use for over 30 years. According to

the USPTO’s website “unveil the new cover design at this special South by Southwest (SXSW) event and discussed the significance and history of the document
