Ann Sarnoff’s 3rd anniversary of being named Chair and CEO of Warner Bros. The first woman to run the studio.

Sarnoff took over one of the most storied studios in Hollywood, second only to Walt Disney.

Three years ago Warner Bros. named BBC’s Ann Sarnoff as its new CEO. BBC executive Ann Sarnoff was named chief of Warner Bros. on Monday, making her the first woman to head the movie studio in its 96-year history. Her appointment follows the departure in March of Kevin Tsujihara, who stepped down after misconduct allegations.
Sarnoff most recently served as the president of BBC Studios Americas.
But to the surprise of much of the industry, WarnerMedia turned to Sarnoff, who has worked primarily in television. Sarnoff, who takes over as chief executive and chair of Warner Bros., is currently president of BBC Studios Americas. She has previously been a top TV executive at Viacom and with the WNBA.
“She brings a consistent and proven track record of innovation, creativity and business results to lead an incredibly successful studio to its next chapter of growth,” Stankey said. “Ann has shown the ability to innovate and grow revenues and has embraced the evolution taking place in our industry.”

The World’s First Business School

For more than 141 years, Wharton has been the place where visionaries, inventors, and trailblazers get their start.

In 1881, American entrepreneur and industrialist Joseph Wharton established the world’s first collegiate school of business at the University of Pennsylvania — a radical idea that revolutionized both business practice and higher education.

Since then, the Wharton School has continued innovating to meet mounting global demand for new ideas, deeper insights, and  transformative leadership. We blaze trails, from the nation’s first collegiate center for entrepreneurship in 1973 to our latest research centers in alternative investments and neuroscience.

“Pi Day” – 314

“Pi Day” – 314

March 14 — or 3/14 — celebrates the mathematical constant of pi. Pi represents the ratio of circumference of a circle divided by its diameter. While it is often abbreviated as 3.14, pi has an infinite number of digits beyond the decimal point, starting with 3.141592653.

One celebration was 3/14/15, perfectly matching the first numbers past the decimal point of pi. “Pi Day.”

Let’s honor this irrational number

March 14 is also Albert Einstein’s 143rd birthday.

ESTEE LAUDER: Founded by a Woman for Women

ESTEE LAUDER: Founded by a Woman for Women

The Estée Story

“I never dreamed about success. I worked for it.” —Estée Lauder

Estée Lauder, the founder of the company that bears her name, was a visionary and a role model. She was a challenger who proved that anything was possible — if you dared to dream it and had the guts and gumption to go for it. Ahead of her time in every way, she created and ran one of the world’s most prestigious and innovative companies while serving as a wife, mother and a loyal friend to many. And she did it all with charm, humor and exquisite style. She loved beauty with a passion and believed wholeheartedly in its power.

Knowing What Women Want

Estée had innate instincts for what women wanted and was the consummate saleswoman and marketer. She believed that to make a sale, you had to touch the consumer, show her the results on her face and explain the products. That was the start of the Company’s personal High-Touch service.

She revolutionized how products were introduced with her now-famous “Gift With Purchase” — later copied by other cosmetic companies and currently a standard industry practice.

Loma Prieta earthquake 32 years since the deadly earthquake.

Loma Prieta earthquake 32 years since the deadly earthquake.

15-seconds that transformed SF.

A San Francisco Bay area earthquake measuring 7.1 in magnitude, killed 67 and injured over 3,000. Over 100,000 buildings damaged or destroyed. (Oct. 17, 1989)

I remember this day as if it were yesterday. I was talking to my wife (she was at home about 5-miles away) and during our conversation she yelled out, “Earthquake!” I replied, “Not over here”, then a minute later my work building started bouncing and the ceiling came down. From the second floor of my building, I jumped down the stairway and I ran out the front door. When everything settled down since I was management I put on a helmet and reentered the building looking for anyone trapped in the building.

On my drive home over the Dumbarton Bridge, (Menlo Park to Newark/Fremont, California) I saw three KGO radio antenna towers laying in the Bay. What an eerie feeling.

Damage:

Five people were killed on Sixth Street between Bluxome and Townsend in San Francisco as a brick facade collapsed onto the sidewalk and street.

Major property damage in San Francisco’s Marina District 60 mi (97 km) from the epicenter resulted from liquefaction of soil used to create waterfront land. Other effects included sand volcanoes, landslides and ground ruptures. Some 12,000 homes and 2,600 businesses were damaged.

In Santa Cruz, close to the epicenter, 40 buildings collapsed, killing six people.

An estimated 1.4 million people lost power following the quake, mainly due to damaged electrical substations.

Power was restored to most of San Francisco by midnight, and all but 12,000 customers had their power restored within two days.

The quake caused an estimated $6 billion (equivalent to $13 billion today) in property damage, becoming one of the most expensive natural disasters in U.S. history at the time.

Fall Freekeh Salad recipes.

Here is a choice of two different Fall Freekeh Salad recipes.

Say hello to your must-try fall lunch – Fall Harvest Freekeh Salad! If you’re brand new to the world of freekeh, this salad is an easy and delicious way to get your feet wet. And if freekeh is already a regular part of your diet, then this is a recipe you’ll definitely want to add to your stash!

This Fall Harvest Freekeh Salad is a culmination of all of my favorite salad-y things in one bowl. It’s part dark leafy green salad and part wholegrain salad, plus it’s full of fun, seasonal goodies that I love, like crisp apples and roasted butternut squash.

The base of the salad is a mix of shredded kale and cooked wholegrain freekeh, which has a similar texture and mouthfeel to wheat berries. They’re firm, yet chewy, with an earthy, nutty taste.

Whisk together apple cider vinegar, honey, olive oil, mustard powder and tarragon in medium bowl. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Mix together celery, golden raisins, currants, scallions, red onion, almonds and sunflower seeds in large bowl. Add dressing and freekeh to large bowl, and toss until combined.

1.) Autumn Cracked Freekeh Salad

Ingredients:

1 cup freekeh.

12 ounces Brussels sprouts, quartered.

1 1/2 cups grapes.

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon olive oil.

1 cup edamame.

1/4 cup goat cheese, crumbled.

2.) Freekeh Salad

1 (1 1/2-pound) butternut squash, peeled, seeds removed and cut into 1/2-inch cubes

1 tablespoon olive oil

3 cups kale leaves (stems removed), finely shredded

Women’s Equality Day – August 26

In a perfect world, Women’s Equality Day wouldn’t even be a thing. On August 26, 1920 women in America were first legally given the right to vote. Fifty years later,  Congress commemorated the day by designating August 26th as Women’s Equality Day.

The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality. Workplaces, libraries, organizations, and public facilities now participate with Women’s Equality Day programs, displays, video showings, or other activities.

Joint Resolution of Congress, 1971

Designating August 26 of each year as Women’s Equality Day

WHEREAS, the women of the United States have been treated as second-class citizens and have not been entitled the full rights and privileges, public or private, legal or institutional, which are available to male citizens of the United States; and

WHEREAS, the women of the United States have united to assure that these rights and privileges are available to all citizens equally regardless of sex; and

WHEREAS, the women of the United States have designated August 26, the anniversary date of the certification of the Nineteenth Amendment, as symbol of the continued fight for equal rights: and

WHEREAS, the women of United States are to be commended and supported in their organizations and activities,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, that August 26th of each year is designated as Women’s Equality Day, and the President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation annually in commemoration of that day in 1920, on which the women of America were first given the right to vote, and that day in 1970, on which a nationwide demonstration for women’s rights took place.

National Dog Day – August 26th

National Dog Day – August 26th

Over 15,000 years ago, a lone hunter came across an injured wolf and aided the animal by nursing him back to health.

Or so the theory goes. One thing is for sure, that when early humans domesticated wolves they formed a friendship that has endured the test of time.

National Dog Day is celebrated August 26th annually and was founded in 2004 to bring attention to the plight of animals around the globe and encourage adoption.

National Dog Day celebrates all dogs, mixed breed and pure. Our mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort. Dogs put their lives on the line every day…for personal protection, for law enforcement, for the disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs and pulling victims of tragedy from wreckage, now they’re detecting cancer and seizures…things even humans cannot do.

53 YEARS AGO: THE BEATLES ‘YELLOW SUBMARINE’ WAS RELEASED.

‘53 YEARS AGO: THE BEATLES ‘YELLOW SUBMARINE’ WAS RELEASED.
Yellow Submarine was primarily the brainchild of George Dunning and Al Broadax — the same duo that spearheaded the Beatles cartoon TV series that aired in the U.S. from 1965-69 — along with art director Heinz Edelmann and Lee Minoff, who wrote the story. But the Beatles wanted as little involvement as possible, so actors were brought in to recreate their voices.
The Simpsons Wouldn’t Exist Without Yellow Submarine.
The movie would fundamentally changed the way viewers experience animation. This year, Yellow Submarine celebrates its 53rd anniversary. In the half century since its release, animation has evolved beyond what could have imagined in the ’60s.
RE-RELEASE
The Beatles’ animated feature film, “Yellow Submarine,” will be re-released in North America in July in celebration of its 53rd anniversary

summer skin protection

Protect Your Skin This Summer

Summer Skin Protection

Summer skin protection can be as easy as wearing a hat and keeping your arms covered. Especially for young children, though, SPF sunscreen is essential  when you will be outdoors in the sun. SPF sunscreens with a strength of S30-50 are recommended for children over 6 months. Before 6 months of age, doctors recommend using physical barriers, such as clothing or umbrellas, rather than sunscreen.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. with an estimated 3.5 million cases diagnosed each year. According to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, it develops as an abnormal or uncontrolled growth of mutated cells of skin, typically in the top layer known as the epidermis. Skin cancer may initially appear as a bump or irregular patch on the skin. The most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. It’s critical that you protect yourself
