Savory Seasoned Rice

Savory Seasoned Rice

This savory seasoned rice recipe from wifemomgeek.com is one of our favorites! We have rice several times a week so it's nice to mix things up! It's subtle enough that the whole family likes it, even my picky eater!

Yesterday, I made spicy pork chops for dinner, and we needed a side with great flavor that wouldn’t overpower the chops. This rice turned out perfectly, so I’m sharing it with you today!Normally, we prefer a low-carb side, like the savory riced cauliflower that I shared a couple of months ago. But since we we’ve been eating down the pantry, the pickings were slim. We always have white rice on hand, though, because I use it frequently for the kiddo’s sensory bins. This combination of seasonings will also work well for brown rice, jasmine rice or even cauliflower with some adjustments.

Give Up Sugar For 8 Weeks?

Eight weeks ago, I made the big decision to give up sugar. I have Autoimmune Metaplastic Atrophic Gastritis, a condition where my immune system attacks the cell walls of my stomach and leads to digestive problems. Because of my diagnosis, I became a modified Paleo eater about three years ago, meaning my meals mainly consist of fresh vegetables, fruit, organic grass-fed meats, broth, and no grains, dairy, gluten or processed sugars.

But though my diet had kept my symptoms at bay for three years, I still felt sugar had a hold over me. That's because I'd still make raw desserts with natural sweeteners (like pure maple syrup) and I'd add sugary fruits like banana, dates, mangoes and grapes to my daily smoothies. I also snacked on some fruit throughout the day as well, because I felt I needed the treat.

How to make chalk paint

How to make chalk paint

So I’ve heard about the glorious chalk paint for a few months now and decided to see what all the hype was about. If you love the shabby look you will l-o-v-e chalk paint. It gives you a nice chalky finish and makes distressing a piece of cake.
One thing I love about chalk paint is it can be used on any surface. AND {bonus} there’s no need for sanding or priming your piece beforehand. Anything that saves me less steps–>I’m there! 😉

Well this is awesome! If you love the hardware store (and why wouldn't you) then this  DIY Magnetic Memo Board is for you! I have quite a few frames stacked in the garage that I've been saving for just the right thing. With 2 girls in middle school, memo boards are an often used tool here in our house. tips for healthy habits

Simple Tips For Healthy Habits

Simple Tips For Healthy Habits

We all have good intentions when it comes to eating perfectly, exercising frequently, and making time to find our Zen. Yet after a while, all this "trying" can get overwhelming — and we're bound to slip up. The important thing to remember in these “I’ve messed up so I’m going to trash the entire day” moments is this: We can get back on track with our next decision. It's easy in theory — the next time you eat an entire package of cookies instead of the three you had planned on eating, simply commit to making a better choice at your next meal. Although even this can be challenging to put into practice, as with everything, healthy living is easier if you break it down into baby steps. Here are 10 ways to get back on track when life derails you:

Lower Your Risk Of Diabetes!

Lower Your Risk Of Diabetes!

Lower Your Risk Of Diabetes!

If you needed some motivation to actually cook something from all those Pinterest boards you created, this might be it.

According to a study from Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, people who cooked meals for themselves at home about 11 to 14 times a week were 13% less likely to develop Type-2 diabetes.

While we would hope this percentage would be a bit higher, this is just one of the many benefits of preparing your own meals. Cooking at home helps you avoid many of the highly processed ingredients, sugar, and unhealthy fats found in fast food, which is always a good thing.

How To Heal Your Gut, and Why It Matters

How To Heal Your Gut, and Why It Matters

Did you know that the function of your immune system, the state of your mental health, the pain or lack thereof in your joints, and even whether or not you have seasonal allergies can all be determined by one thing?

Do you know what it is?

The health of your gut!

Conventional and unconventional research is proving it over and over: poor gut health = poor overall health.

If you experience “common” digestive complaints such as occasional gas, bloating, or heartburn, your gut needs some work.

Do you have even worse digestive issues like persistent constipation or diarrhea? That means your gut really needs attention.

And if you’re suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Crohn’s disease, it’s past time for you to give your guts some love!

But what if you don’t have digestive complaints at all? What if you feel like you can eat anything without an upset tummy?

Chances are, you probably can’t.

Even if you don’t have digestive ailments, you more than likely have another symptom (or two) of compromised gut health.

Common issues like asthma, allergies, eczema, acne, PMS, and arthritis can actually be symptoms of an unhappy gut.

eliminate sugar in just 3 days

Eliminate Sugar in just 3 Days

Ready to eliminate sugar in just 3 days?

For the New Year, are you ready to eliminate sugar in just 3 days? Many people are starting their resolutions right by eating better and getting more exercise. Perhaps, If you read the recent post on Candida Overgrowth, you might be looking at ways to reduce or eliminate sugar from your diet. This article from Thrive Market will help you along your way!

Mmm…donuts. When it comes to sugar, Homer Simpson is the everyman. His drooling reaction to donuts might as well be any of us at the grocery store, staring at racks of cupcakes, candies, and sodas. Collectively, we're a nation addicted. But you don't have to be. Why should you be worried about the white stuff? Because it's doing a number on your body. As soon as you swallow that first bite of that cinnamon bun or chocolate bar, your blood sugar levels spike, forcing the body to create more insulin as it

“Strong Is The New Pretty”

“Strong Is The New Pretty”

Photographer Kate Parker doesn't want her daughters, Alice, 6, and Ella, 9, to be what society expects them to be. If they don't want to parade around in princess dresses, they don't have to. She wants them to be exactly who they are: "Loud, athletic, fearless, messy, joyous, frustrated," as she puts it.

When Parker started this project, she really just wanted to record the memories of the girls' childhood. But then she started to notice a pattern in the images: The more she was able to capture the essence of their character, the stronger the images were.

"I started to see patterns and recognize that the images where the girls were authentically captured were the strongest images," Parker said in an email to MindBodyGreen. "The images that showed the girls as they genuinely are were my favorites. After seeing this, I started to shoot with that in mind."
Her focus then shifted from capturing a moment in time to celebrating the girls for who they are — grass-stained knees, scraped elbows, tangled hair and all — and the results are pretty powerful.

Coconut Oil Granola with Chia & Flax

I didn’t really discover my love of granola until about a year ago. And granted, there are some pretty lovely flavors and brands out there, but after you make your own, there isn’t any turning back. You can make it crunchy, control the ingredients and add your favorite nuts, spices, fruit, etc.

This version is simple, classic and full of aroma and spice. Another reason to love it? All of the lovely nutrition from the chia seeds, flax, oats, nuts and coconut oil. Honestly, it feels wonderful knowing that you nourish your body with healthy food.

Easy Tips to Drink More Water Every Day!

Are you being told to drink more water?

It's easy to get caught up in trying to find the perfect product, but we often miss one of the most crucial parts of our diet: good old-fashioned water.

You probably already know that about 70 percent of the human body is made up of water, and it’s absolutely essential to human life. Water is like a liquid shuttle that transports elements like nutrients, proteins, hormones, and other chemical signals to where they’re needed most in our bodies.

And yet many of us are dehydrated and don’t even know it, suffering from a number of health conditions when a few extra glasses of water might make a world of difference. After all, water helps to reduce pain, diminishes hunger, keeps our poop flowing, and sweeps toxins away.
